Sport Climbing Takes On France
The competition in Villars has only just ended and the athletes are already on their way to the mountain town of Chamonix, France for the IFSC Lead and Speed World Cups from July 11 to 13. Climbers will take on the wall and each other at the outdoor venue situated at the foot of Mont Blanc.
The second to last speed climbing event of the year takes places as the athletes race to claim a 2019 season title. The competition in Villars was full of tight finishes and shocking slips, and the one in Chamonix is certain to be a great show. Ahead of Villars, France’s own Bassa MAWEM was sitting at the top of the rankings, but now Dmitrii TIMOFEEV (RUS) is quickly catching up after a second-place finish. Anouck JAUBERT (FRA) is also positioned at the top of the rankings, currently tied with the speedy YiLing SONG (CHN), who set a new Women’s Speed Climbing World Record earlier this year.
Lead climbing is in full swing as the climbers prepare to take on the second world cup of the year. Janja GARNBRET continues to be in top form following her flawless bouldering season as the only competitor to top the women’s wall during semi-finals and to the pass the crux during the final. All eyes will be on her in the upcoming events, waiting to see if she can make a clean sweep in a different discipline. After his win in Villars, Swiss climber Sascha LEHMANN will also be a central focus at this weekend’s competition as the list of this year’s top lead climbers begins to take shape.
