IFSC WORLD CUP IN LJUBLJANA CANCELLED
The International Federation of Sport Climbing and the Alpine Association of Slovenia jointly declare that the IFSC World Cup scheduled to be held in Ljubljana (SLO) from September 25 to 26 have been cancelled.
The competition was supposed to be the first ever contested in the Slovenian capital city. Indeed, for 24 consecutive years from 1996 to 2019, the city of Kranj – located 30 kilometres north of Ljubljana – welcomed a stage of the Lead World Cup and became a landmark of the Sport Climbing international circuit.
The cancellation is a direct consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic that is still affecting many countries all around the world.
IFSC President Marco Scolaris said:
“After so many years, it is hard to believe that in 2020 we won’t have a World Cup in Slovenia. It is an additional reason to increase our efforts towards the recovery from COVID-19. Let’s all do our part and we’ll return to Slovenia in 2021.”
Jože Rovan, President of the Alpine Association of Slovenia, said:
“We had to make a difficult decision and cancel this year’s World Cup. However, we believe that next season we will be able to enjoy sport climbing spectacles together again, so we are ready to organize the competition to the same extent in 2021.”
