During the 129th IOC Session in Rio de Janeiro 2016, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) added Sport Climbing to the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. The competition will include the Combined format which will feature all three Sport Climbing disciplines, Boulder, Lead and Speed in one event with a total of six medals handed out to our sport’s first Olympic athletes.
As of 20 December 2020. Please note that this is not the seeded list.
History was made at the IFSC World Championships in Hachioji as Sport Climbing’s top athletes went head-to-head in the first Olympic Qualifying Event from 18 to 21 August 2019. At the conclusion of the competition, eight of the highest placed athletes per gender, with a maximum of two per country, had earned a quota place for Tokyo 2020.
The second Olympic Qualifying Event took place from 28 November to 1 December 2019 in Toulouse/Tournefeuille, France. The top 20 athletes per gender in the Combined Rankings, following the IFSC World Cup Series 2019, battled it out for the chance to earn one of the next six quota spots for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
From 25 February to 1 March 2020, the IFSC Pan-American Championships saw two more athletes qualify for the Games. Later in 2020, the remaining quota places will be determined during the African, Asian, European and Oceania Championships.
